“The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.” Ronald Reagan

To become a leader, we have to go through a lots of transformations. Some go through it quickly. Some go through it slowly. And, unfortunately, some never go through it at all.

There are a huge number of books regarding the matter of Leadership. There are millions of opinions, articles, and research studies on what makes an effective, successful, great leader. The advice can often seem contradictory, and the list of required leadership traits is overwhelming. So what’s the most suitable trait for that profile?

Here are some traits that would be required to become a successful and an influential leader:

Visionary

Exceptional leaders have the ability to look into their company’s future and make clear, accurate goals that will benefit their organization. They are confident and optimistic, inspiring enthusiasm in those around them. Being a visionary is about managing change while striking a balance between stability and growth. A leader must incorporate new approaches without getting distracted from the main goals.  Being a visionary means understanding that continuous change occurring all around, so what worked in the past may not always work now.

Self-Managing

It’s hard to manage others effectively if you can’t manage yourself. Self-managing implies having the capacity to organize your objectives and being in charge of achieving those targets. As a viable leader, you should have the capacity to direct your chance, consideration and feelings, while staying mindful of your qualities, shortcomings and potential roots of disposition.

“Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish.” —Sam Walton

Be Customer Focused

To get the best results, a leader must know the customers. Customers may be internal or external. Everything you do, needs to be directed at what customers need or will need. Get “outside the glass.” In other words, look beyond your area. You should find out what your customers want by asking them. You can’t sense this one. You should continually listen to the customers; really listen to what they have to say.

Acting Strategically

A forward-thinking, open-minded approach is necessary for today’s leaders. “Leaders must always be prepared to adjust their strategies to capture emerging opportunities or tackle unexpected challenges.” Thinking strategically is an ongoing process that involves assessing your business environment.

Being An Effective Communicator

Powerful leaders  know when to talk and when to tune in. They are powerful communicators and can clearly and briefly disclose to their workers everything from authoritative objectives to particular tasks. If people don’t understand or aren’t aware of your expectations, they will fall short, so the more specific you can be, the better you would be. You should have the capacity to impart on all levels: one on one, to the division and to the whole staff, and additionally through telephone, email and web-based social networking.

Being Responsible

Effective leaders know how to utilize power and authority appropriately without overpowering or overwhelming representatives. Successful managers consider themselves responsible and assume liability for their own missteps and they anticipate that others will do likewise. They can work inside built up strategies, and be profitable and effective in their choices. They appreciate the importance of supporting and encouraging individuality while also understanding organizational structures and the need to follow rules and policies.

Charismatic

People usually perceive leaders as larger than life. Charisma plays a large part in this perception. Leaders who have charisma are able to arouse strong emotions in their employees by defining a vision which unites and captivates them. Using this vision, leaders motivate employees to reach toward a future goal by tying the goal to substantial personal rewards and values.

“Charisma depends on a unique mix of passion, an ability to transmit that passion to others, the ability to convey a message in a simple way that people get…” — Dr. Richard Wiseman

For better or worse, the truth is that people are drawn to charismatic leaders.

Managing Complexity

Leaders must be problem solvers who can settle on choices under quickly moving conditions. Figuring out how to lead in a complex situation is an essential ability for any leader. Even before any definitive information is available, effective leaders must assess a situation’s complexity and choose appropriate courses of action.

Team Building And Promoting Teamwork

Successful leadership built on the people you work with. Team building is essential to leading a diverse and unique group of people with distinct personalities, motivations and skills. Strong team and teamwork are the key to achieve many of things on this list, such as fostering innovation, effective communication and achieving your organization’s goals. If you recruit and develop the right team, you will be creating an unstoppable force that will drive your organization’s success. There is nothing like knowing that a leader has your back and is going to take care of you.

Creating Lasting Relationships

Convincing leaders accomplish something beyond that inspire others to follow them. They know how to motivate others and strive wholeheartedly that the employees work for the organization with great zeal. Workers who feel esteemed and acknowledged, feel like what they do has any kind of effect, will feel stimulated to push harder to make progress for their organization.

Conclusion

Overall, leaders are larger than life in many ways. Personal traits play a major role in determining who will and who will not be comfortable leading others. However, it’s important to remember that people are forever learning and changing. Leaders are rarely born. Circumstances and persistence are major components in the developmental process of any leader. So if your goal is to become a leader, work on developing those areas of your personality that you feel are not “up to par”
